This campaign is led by North NJ Democratic Socialists of America with support from Make the Road NJ.
The $20 rent cap existed in Elizabeth for over 30 years, keeping rentals affordable in that time. In 2022, after pressure from corporate landlords, the City Council lifted the cap. We’re now fighting to restore the cap to keep housing affordable.
November 3rd is Election Day. You can also vote early October 24 - November 1st at the Sampson Center (800 Anna Street) or vote by mail.
No, the cap on the ballot would only effect rent controlled buildings with 3 or more units older than 30 years.
Rent control is a strong solution for housing affordability in New Jersey. It keeps tenants housed with stable, predictable rents each year. The cap on the ballot this year would cap rent increases at $20 for leases in 2027.
